Telangana Politics Erupt Over CM Revanth Reddy’s Remarks on Hindu Deities

A fresh political storm has broken out in Telangana after a video of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy making casual references to Hindu gods during an internal Congress meeting went viral, sparking sharp reactions from Opposition parties — primarily the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). What began as an informal, closed-door interaction with senior party leaders on December 2, 2025, has now escalated into a full-blown controversy, with accusations of hurting religious sentiments, distorting faith traditions, and disrespecting public sentiment.

The controversy centers around a seemingly off-hand remark made by Revanth Reddy while addressing newly appointed District Congress Committee (DCC) chiefs. In an attempt to highlight ideological diversity within the Congress, the Chief Minister invoked an analogy from Hinduism, saying the religion embraces nearly three crore deities, with believers free to choose the form of god that resonates with them. He then drew a parallel to the Congress Party being home to people of diverse backgrounds, views, and leadership styles.

The Viral Clip and Its Aftermath

Though the meeting was meant to be internal, a short clip from the event was leaked within hours and rapidly circulated on social media platforms such as X, Instagram, and Facebook. In the video, the Chief Minister is seen speaking in a light-hearted tone, explaining the party’s broadmindedness and inclusivity by comparing it to the vast range of deities worshipped in Hindu tradition.

What Revanth Reddy appeared to intend as a metaphor, however, was quickly interpreted by critics as insensitive and irreverent. As the video spread, political opponents seized the opportunity to accuse him of mocking Hindu gods and undermining cultural beliefs.

BJP's Sharp Reaction

The Bharatiya Janata Party reacted swiftly and aggressively. Telangana BJP president, along with senior leaders, held a press conference condemning the remarks. According to the BJP, the Chief Minister’s casual use of Hindu religious imagery was “inappropriate,” “disrespectful,” and “reflective of Congress’s longstanding disregard for Hindu sentiments.”

BJP leaders argued that equating political diversity with the multiplicity of Hindu gods trivializes faith. They further demanded a public apology, calling the Chief Minister’s comments “an insult to the beliefs of crores of devout Hindus.”

The issue has provided the BJP with fresh ammunition at a time when the party has been actively trying to consolidate its position in Telangana, a state where its presence has grown in recent years but where it still seeks to dislodge Congress and BRS as the primary political contenders.

Several national BJP figures also reacted, amplifying the controversy by framing the comment as part of what they termed the Congress party’s “habit of appeasement politics” and “lack of respect for Sanatana Dharma.”

BRS Joins the Attack

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi, being the primary Opposition party in the state after losing power in the 2023 Assembly elections, also joined the criticism. BRS leaders accused Revanth Reddy of irresponsible leadership, arguing that a Chief Minister must exercise greater restraint and sensitivity, especially while referring to matters of faith.

They also alleged that such statements reveal a “pattern of immaturity” in the Congress leadership. Some BRS spokespersons accused the Congress government of attempting to divert public attention from issues such as unemployment, agricultural distress, and local governance failures by stirring unnecessary controversies.

Given the BRS’s long history of invoking regional pride and cultural identity, the party framed its criticism around the idea that Telangana’s leadership must respect the religious and cultural values of its people.

Congress Defends the Chief Minister

In response to the growing uproar, Congress leaders came to the defense of the Chief Minister, calling the criticism “manufactured” and “politically motivated.” According to them, Revanth Reddy’s remarks were taken out of context. Senior Congress figures stated that the Chief Minister was merely emphasizing inclusiveness and diversity in a metaphorical way and that his words were twisted for political gain.

Some Congress spokespersons also accused the Opposition of deliberately distorting the message to inflame sentiments. They argued that Hindu tradition itself celebrates plurality, and mentioning this fact should not be construed as disrespect.

The party maintained that the comments were neither derogatory nor aimed at undermining any religious belief. They also highlighted Revanth Reddy’s longstanding record of participating in Hindu festivals and temple events, pointing out that the allegation of disrespect does not align with his actions as a public figure.

Revanth Reddy’s Own Clarification

As the controversy intensified, the Chief Minister himself offered a clarification. Revanth Reddy stated that he holds the Hindu faith in the highest regard and has always respected religious diversity. He said that his analogy was intended to explain the democratic nature of the Congress Party and should not be misinterpreted as mocking or belittling any deity.

He reiterated that Hinduism’s vast pantheon symbolizes freedom of belief, acceptance, and coexistence — values he wished to highlight in relation to the Congress Party’s organizational philosophy.

His clarification, however, did little to calm the political opposition, which continued demanding an unconditional apology.

A Larger Pattern in Indian Politics

This controversy highlights a recurring theme in contemporary Indian politics: the sensitivity surrounding religious references, especially those involving Hinduism. Politicians across the spectrum have learned that any comment touching upon religious traditions can become a flashpoint, often amplified by social media.

In an era where digital platforms can turn a few seconds of video into a national debate, political leaders increasingly walk a tightrope between expression and caution. In this case, even though the Chief Minister’s comments were not made in a public rally or intended for mass circulation, the leak underscores how internal interactions can spill into the public domain and trigger unexpected consequences.

Impact on Telangana’s Political Landscape

Telangana politics, already marked by intense competition between Congress, BRS, and BJP, is likely to see heightened polarization in the coming weeks. The BJP may use this controversy to attract sections of Hindu voters, especially urban and semi-urban groups. The BRS, meanwhile, seeks to portray Congress as inexperienced and unstable.

For the Congress government, this incident is a reminder that every word from a Chief Minister carries weight and can shape public perception. It also exposes the vulnerability of political messaging in an environment where opponents watch closely for potential missteps.

Whether the controversy fades quickly or escalates into a prolonged debate will depend on how each party leverages it in the coming days. But for now, Revanth Reddy’s analogy — intended as a harmless comparison — has added yet another chapter to the volatile interplay of religion and politics in India.
